The works at Barbrook Avenue included Aco drainage kerbs, construction of new footway, street lighting, carriageway construction & surfacing. The work was carried during normal working hours, using traditional methods & with standard give & take traffic management.
Due to the lack of drainage on the existing carriageway a drainage solution was required. ACO KerbDrain is a combined kerb drainage system for use in a range of highway, car parking & Sustainable Drainage System applications. It is the first combined kerb drainage system of its kind to use recycled materials & be independently certified & Kite marked to BS EN 1433: 2002. ACO Kerbdrain was used over several hundred meters to overcome the projects drainage difficulties. This all in one kerb & drainage solution allowed significant value engineering for the project.
A 1.5m wide footway was constructed. The footpaths comprised of 20mm of 6mm DBM surface course, 80mm of AC10 dense bin 100/150rec to BSEN13108-1 Asphalt concrete & 150mm Type 1. The footway construction varied at vehicle crossover points where it consisted of 20mm of 6mm DBM surface course, 30mm of 14mm HRA binder course, 150mm of CBM3 base course & a 150mm Type 1 sub-base in soft areas.
The carriageway was extended by a 1m to allow easy flow of traffic. This coupled with a new footpath meant safer walking routes by the road side for the pedestrians. The carriageway was of standard construction noted previously. A Pedestrian Crossing was also added to the works.
Liaising with the residents on a regular basis played a vital part in ensuring safe access at all time to the residents on the street. DB Construction completed these work ahead of schedule & on budget.
It is the work conducted on these types of projects that allowed DB Construction to be certified with the Highways Agency & conduct larger types of works on major roads such as the A1.
