The requirement was to construct a new drainage system & re-construct Prince Albert Road & Footpath in order for Essex County Council to adopt this private road. The challenge was to complete this project while accommodating residents of the 22 houses that reside along the stretch of road to be re-constructed, maintaining the vehicle access crossovers and ensuring the safety of the general public. Early consultation with the residents was vital to ensure that both planning and the relationship between DB Construction and those affected by the works were addressed prior to any works starting on site.

The works consisted of:

The installation of a new drainage system to collect the surface water from the newly constructed road. Osma 300mm twin wall pipes were used with precast 1050mm concrete catch pit chambers. All road gullies were installed to facilitate the construction.

There was 450mm of excavation and reconstruction of the road consisting of 40mm of 10mm SMA surface course, 60mm of 20mm DBM binder course, 165mm of 32mm DBM base course & 150mm Type 1 sub-base.

The construction of new footpaths comprising of 20mm of 6mm DBM surface course, 80mm of AC10 dense bin 100/150rec to BSEN13108-1 Asphalt concrete & 150mm Type 1. The footpaths included new HB2 half battered kerbs & edgings; there was new surfacing at existing footpaths. Vehicle access footpath crossovers and Birco 100 drainage channels with 150mm concrete bed and backing were installed along the whole stretch where required.

Even with adverse weather conditions such as freezing ground and heavy snow all the works were completed on time and within budget.
