After decades behind virtually closed doors, its treasures overgrown and largely unknown, DB Construction was appointed to revive one of Britain’s largest and most important ‘secret gardens’ – Wrest Park.
English Heritage were undergoing major restoration to the grounds and were scheduled to reveal the first fruits of an ambitious 20-year plan in August 2011 by opening up the grounds to the public. In December 2010 DB Construction was appointed to carry out one of the four key elements that would kick start the master plan – new visitor facilities. This would require a new visitor centre, café, seating and dining areas, children’s play area, waste treatment plant, car parking and access roads.
Having undertaken many other works similar in nature to this scope, our approach was to understand the local conditions, recognise the prevailing environment and know the requirements of the various overseeing organisations.
DB Construction delivered on time and budget , on the 1st August 2011 Wrest Park welcomed the media and public to taste its new facilities for the first time. The results and feedback were magnificent, it was a sterling performance against some difficult conditions but the collective efforts and determination of the team ensured expectations were exceeded. It was a real pleasure to be involved in such a great project.
